New showroom for sofa.com

Chelsea, London

Overview

Working with Sophie Amini Design we helped create a new showroom for the rapidly expanding sofa.com. Reclaimed materials and fixtures were used extensively in the transformation of this large, four metre high industrial space. This height allowed us to install a mezzanine: a weighty steel collar was designed and made to wrap around the existing iron beam and elegantly support one corner of the floor structure.  Work included a kitchen, a sample station, swatch trolleys and desking.

Dominic & Rebecca's bathroom

Islington, London

Overview

We were commissioned by Dominic and Rebecca to design and build a bathroom for their period property in Islington. With over three metre high ceilings and a spacious footprint, the room was kept open and simple and finished with high quality materials throughout. A wet room shower was created by cutting away some of the floor joist to allow a slope into a slot drain. Solid walnut was used for the wall panelling and a large floating wall unit which was perimeter lit with concealed LEDs. A heated limestone floor completed the luxury.

Materials

  • Fire Earth bath, WC and basin
  • Hans Grohe Axor Montreux brassware in brushed nickel
  • Wall mounted basin furniture in solid walnut and walnut veneered plywood
  • Fired earth limestone floor and wall tiles

The Mazot

Verbier, Switzerland

Overview

What a spectacular commission. Design and build a solid oak Mazot for the side of a mountain in Verbier, Switzerland. A mazot is essentially a small swiss hut, but here, its been interpreted as luxury accomodation. Made almost entirely from French Oak, it includes a sedum roof, wood burning stove, a little kitchenette, a wall hung toilet, and most sumptuously ... a heated leather floor!

Many thanks to Pat for entrusting us with this project and for the opportunity to install a piece of work in one of the most beautiful locations we have ever been to.

GLASS display cases for HEBbURN LIBRARY

Hebburn, Tyne and Wear

Working with artist Kathryn Hodgkinson this commission involved creating a number of display cases designed to resonate the stories, past and present, of the local community. These boxes were slotted into the library shelving system and involved back lit, multi layered, screen printed and UV bonded glass.

New showroom for the Natural curtain company

Chelsea, London

Overview

Relocating from Suffolk, we were asked by the Natural Curtain Company to help set up their brand new London showroom in conjunction with Sophie Amini Design. The brief was complex as the space had to fulfill a number of requirements including a new mezzanine floor to house the office staff and clever storage solutions for the huge number of samples the company need to stock.

love me live with me

London & Newcastle upon Tyne

This project with Kathryn Hodgkinson and Designed & Made from Newcastle upon Tyne saw an old wooden cart transformed into a travelling exhibition which toured London during the 2010 London Design Festival. A number of Designed & Made members were specially commissioned to produce art objects and curiosities for the cart. As an exploration into the relationship between peoples and 'things',  these objects were then offered to the general public with the proviso that they pass them on to someone else a week later and return to the Love Me Live with Me website to blog about their experience. We were responsible for designing, making and touring the cart with Kathryn.

"This is not a precious project, it is an experiment; an opportunity to interact and ask questions about people’s relationship with objects. In addition to the dispersion of specially commissioned pieces we will also use the cart to generate discussion and debate around the objects that we live with and love. This is also a project about trust and participation, its going to be really interesting to see how far these objects travel and who keeps the chain rolling."

We have just completed our week on the trail at London Design Festival. We have been giving away multiple items from our wandering market cart. Each recipient has been  asked to live with the object and blog about it here. We are interested in the impact that the object might have had on a life for the week is it owned by somebody. We want to see photographs and hear words about the object as it moves around the country."

Creative Partnerships / Staindrop

Newcastle upon Tyne & County Durham

Overview

As part of the national Creative Partnerships project, the directors of Cobalt Studios, of which Mark was a director, were combined with Staindrop Comprehensive in County Durham to work with children in an exploration into the nature of space. Over a number of sessions, the young people were asked to visualise their ideas of what makes a space and how it might become inspirational. The culmination of these studies saw a number of full scale installations realised including a dome made from green Ikea bins, a revolving bus stop complete with glitterball and sound system, mobile triangular dens and a woven rope structure. The work was presented in an exhibition at the Stephenson building in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Creative Partnerships / Southwick

Newcastle upon Tyne & County Durham

Overview

Working with Effie Burns and Kathryn Hodgkinson, this was another Creative Partnerships project working with Southwick Primary school in a study of 'What is History' and in advance of their new school premises. Kathryn and Effie sourced lots of old paraphernalia from the school to be housed in a new museum on wheels, (co) designed and built by Mark. Whilst acting as a home for these historic objects, the colourful boxes contained suprises such as a counter balanced table top that dropped down, a tea chest which could be pulled out and secret drawers.
